We all know that one child, maybe it is your own, that mispronounces words and we all get a good laugh. Their speech sounds "cute" but no one is able to fully understand them. WHAT CAN A SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST DO?

When I tell people I am a speech therapist, the general response is "oh so you teach people how to talk?" The answer to that is yes, but there is so much more. Speech-language pathologists help individuals with: expressive language, receptive language, social skills, articulation, phonological skills, stuttering, feeding and swallowing, cognition, augmentative communication, and likely more that I have yet to discover.

Many parents, especially first time parents, are unsure of what their child should be able to say and/or understand. How many words should they have? Should they know how to follow basic directions? It is difficult to assess your own child's abilities, especially if they are not in a daycare or preschool setting.
